Astronomy Day
In 2011 Astronomy Day is Saturday, May 7 and gives astronomy-lovers a chance to share their passion with the general public.
The event was started in 1973 by Doug Berger, the President of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. His intent was to set up various telescopes in busy urban locations so that passersby could enjoys views of the heavens. Since then the event has expanded and is now sponsored by a number of organizations associated with astronomy.
Astronomy Day also forms part of Astronomy Week, which begins on the preceding Monday.
The RASC Victoria Centre and the University of Victoria will be hosting this years events. There will be a series of lectures, films, static displays and observing sessions at the new Observatory on top of the Bob Wright building.
